Male changes

Changes in boys during puberty

It's completely normal to experience puberty at any point between the ages of 8 and 14, and these are some of the changes you may notice.

Filling out:

Your shoulders will get wider, and your muscles grow and strength improves.

Your voice will ‘break’:

As you go through puberty it will become permanently deeper. During this process, you may find your voice is very deep one minute and goes high the next. This is completely normal.

Penis and testicles:

Your penis and testicles will grow, and your scrotum will get darker. You may start to get erections – when your penis goes hard and stiff – which can happen at any time.

Producing sperm:

Your testicles start to produce semen, which contains sperm. This might be released when you have an erection. This is called ejaculation. Once sperm is made and ejaculation happens, if you had sex without protection, you could get someone pregnant. You may have 'wet dreams' – when you ejaculate in your sleep. This is completely normal. See the sexual health section for more.
