North East and Cumbria Paediatric Asthma and Allergy (NECPAAC)

The Child Health and Wellbeing Network Asthma Leadership Group supported PANNEC (Paediatric Asthma Network North East and Cumbria) to present the systemwide NECPAAC (North East and Cumbria Paediatric Asthma and Allergy) conference in June 2023.

The purpose of the session was to offer pragmatic advice and guidance based on patient journey and experience and aimed to improve asthma care in the community by improving awareness, skill, knowledge and confidence to more effectively manage risk and improve experiences and quality of life for children with Asthma. The conference offered a series of interactive workshops for colleagues to chose from throughout the day. The event was aimed at a wide ranging audience including wider education, social care, housing and pharmacy professionals as well as a wide range of health professionals.

The event took place in June 23 at The Fed in Gateshead and was attended by over 80 delegates from across the geography and system. Feedback from the event was positive and enabled the sharing of learning and experience across the system.

Plenary Session - Full Plenary full set

These slides cover an introduction to the CHWN and the work of the Asthma Leadership Group.

  • Dr Ahmed Hegab provides background and context to the work and presents some admissions data for the region and provides an outline of the National Asthma Care Bundle and an introduction to the resources available on the NENC Healthier Together Website. The opening session also shares information about the available training resources.
  • Dr Jen Townshend provides an overview of the various available resources.
  • Dr Mike McKean shares a session on the environment, air quality and the impact on asthma.
  • Dr Rosemary Thwaites shares information about transition from paediatric healthcare services to adult healthcare services and the needs of people with long term health conditions and introduces the ME first transition model and Moving on Asthma. This session also provides an overview of the NENC 10 Stage approach to Transition.
  • Dr Samatha Moss presents a session on socio-economic factors, child poverty and health inequalities and the impact.
  • Dr Bright introduces a session on allergy and anaphylaxis
  • Dr Samantha Moss delivered a session on concordance with asthma treatment and its importance and provides some practical advice about how to implement monitoring and how to improve concordance.

The Conference was closed jointly by Dr Ahmed Hegab and Dr Mike McKean with the delivery of a Call to Action

The workshop shares a series of scenarios for discussion and supports participants to effectively support cyp and families and addresses the recognition of uncontrolled asthma
Workshop 2 – Managing Asthma in the Community/Schools Workshop 2 managing asthma in the community Carol Barwick and Clare Caygill lead the delivery of an interactive workshop focussing on asthma management in the community and within schools. The workshop shares a series of scenarios for discussion and supports participants to effectively support cyp and families and addresses the recognition of uncontrolled asthma
Workshop 3 – Inhaler Workshop Workshop 3 inhaler techniques Carol Barwick hosts an interactive session with associated resources to demonstrate inhaler choice and technique through a series of scenarios. The session covers use of a spacer device with mask, options for children under and over 5 and how to use them effectively
Workshop 4 – Recognising uncontrolled asthma Workshop 4 NR This was an interactive session delivered by Dr Neelmanee Ramphul, Dr Arshid Murad and Dr Elizabeth Mclellan which focussed on recognition and escalation of uncontrolled asthma, management according to BTS guidelines and referral pathways
Workshop 5 – Ask the Expert Workshop 5 question slides This was an interactive session delivered by a range of experts in response to the questions that had been submitted by delegates in advance of the conference
